You’re running the terminal when the vessel is alongside, the yard is at ninety percent, and the gate queue is lengthening — and all three problems want the same labor and equipment. That trade-off is container terminal operations: keeping three flows moving against each other in real time. Vessel flow covers berth windows, crane splits, and hatch sequencing so ships sail on schedule. Yard flow covers stacking strategy, reefer and hazardous-goods segregation, and housekeeping moves so the boxes are findable and reachable. Who works in terminal operations.
The operations floor runs on shift supervisors, equipment controllers, and planners; above them sit operations managers and terminal managers accountable for the whole vessel-yard-gate plan. This page is written for the tier above the floor — the mid-to-senior terminal manager who owns the numbers, the port logistics manager whose inland chain depends on the terminal’s throughput, and the operations lead being groomed for a container-terminal VP or COO seat.
That next seat is a different job.
